Spinel, a magnesium-aluminum oxide, was often mistaken for ruby or sapphire until its distinct characteristics were discovered in 1783. It is commonly found as an alluvial deposit, having eroded from its original rock formation. In Burma, spinel is found with rubies in gem gravels. Spinel's color, which ranges from rich reds and pinks to purples and violets, is due to impurities and requires no treatments. Purple spinel is classified as an Almandine Spinel and exhibits a violet hue. Its crystals are so perfect that they're said to be "polished by the spirits" in Burma.
