Sri Lanka, particularly Ratnapura, is a steady and historic producer of fine sapphire, known for its rich cornflower blue color caused by trace elements of iron and titanium. The name 'sapphire' is derived from Ancient Greek, and the gemstone is formed under high pressures and temperatures. Most sapphires undergo heat treatment to optimize their color. Blue sapphire, part of the corundum mineral species, is often associated with the 5th, 45th and 65th wedding anniversaries, is the birthstone for September. This historical stone is referenced several times in biblical scripture.
