- Malaia Garnet: Tanzania, No Treatment, Round, Faceted, 7mm, (1), 1.49 ctw
Malaia garnets, first discovered in the 1960s in Tanzania, were initially rejected by gem dealers due to their unique appearance. However, they gained popularity in the 1970s and are now found in various locations, including South Kenya, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. These gems range in color from pale to dark shades of pink, orange, red, and brown, with the rarest and most valuable being pinkish-orange. Some Malaia garnets exhibit color-change phenomena due to chromium or vanadium impurities, and are known for their unique red flashes. These garnets are a hybrid variety, primarily a mix of pyrope and spessartine. Garnet is know as the birthstone for January.
Use a soft cloth to gently wipe clean the item you wish to clean. Remove any remaining impurities with mild diluted soap. Rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly before storing away. Do not use abrasive cleaners, steamers or ultrasonic machines. Do not submerge or clean any of our gemstones with liquid cleaners.
